Behind the Scenes: RPSM’s Innovative Partnership with Correctional Facilities
At Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan (RPSM), we’re often asked about our unique partnership with correctional facilities. This innovative program not only helps dogs find loving homes but also provides valuable skills and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates. Let’s take a closer look at how this partnership works and what foster families can expect.
The Inmate-Trainer Selection Process
Our partnership begins with a rigorous selection process for inmate trainers. These individuals must:
- Apply for the position of dog trainer within the prison
- Have a clean record with no recent disciplinary issues or “tickets”
- Not have any history of sexual offenses or animal cruelty
Due to the program’s popularity, there’s often a waiting list for inmates wanting to participate. We currently work with 28 trainers who care for 14 dogs in each 10-week cycle.
Training the Trainers
Once selected, inmate trainers receive comprehensive education on dog training techniques. RPSM provides:
- Books and learning videos on CD
- Training on various commands and tricks
- Education on addressing common issues like separation anxiety and crate training
- Ongoing resources for trainers to expand their knowledge
The “Marker System” Training Method
Our program utilizes the “Marker System” for dog training. This compassionate, non-violent method is similar to clicker training but uses a verbal “Yes” to mark correct behaviors. This system allows for quick learning, as dogs are motivated by food rewards.
Daily Care and Safety
Inmate trainers are responsible for all aspects of daily care, including:
-
Feeding and walking
-
Bathing and nail trimming
-
Administering medications when needed
-
Providing monthly flea and tick treatments
RPSM supplies all necessary food, treats, toys, and medical supplies. If a dog requires veterinary care beyond what can be provided in the facility, RPSM arranges for professional medical attention.
Timeline and Expectations for Foster Families
-
Pre-Training: Most dogs are placed with foster families before entering the correctional facility program.
-
Training Period: Dogs undergo a 10-week training program at the correctional facility.
-
Weekly Updates: Approved adopters receive weekly reports on their dog’s progress throughout the training period.
-
Post-Training Placement:
-
Dogs with approved adopters go directly to their new homes.
-
Dogs without adopters return to their foster families or shelters.
-
Some shelter dogs may have adopters waiting for them upon completion of training.
-
-
Transition Support: RPSM offers various forms of support during the transition period:
-
Contact with previous foster families for advice
Potential financial assistance for professional trainers if needed
Access to training videos demonstrating learned commands
-
Addressing Behavioral Issues
If behavioral issues arise during training, trainers work to address and correct them. In rare cases where severe issues (like biting or aggression) can’t be resolved, the dog may be removed from the program. Foster families may choose to take the dog back or not.
Benefits of the Program
This partnership benefits both the dogs and the inmates:
-
Dogs learn valuable manners and skills, increasing their chances of adoption.
-
Inmates gain marketable skills they can use upon release.
-
Many dogs entering the program due to behavioral issues leave with improved manners and training.
Visiting Restrictions
For security reasons, foster families cannot visit the correctional facility. Even RPSM volunteers must undergo annual background checks to attend scheduled events at the prison.
Conclusion
Our partnership with correctional facilities is a cornerstone of RPSM’s mission to help dogs reach their full potential and find loving homes. By combining professional training techniques with the dedication of inmate trainers, we’re able to provide dogs with the skills they need to thrive in their forever homes.
For those considering fostering or adopting, remember that patience and consistency are key during the transition period. With the support of RPSM and the solid foundation provided by our training program, you’ll be well-equipped to welcome your new furry family member home.
